Solid Versatility

By Francie Healy

Since 1990, RND Construction has been known in the industry as a quality renovation company that uses and promotes environmentally- friendly technology and products. Its president, Roy Nandram, has been an environmental enthusiast in construction practices going back to 1982.

This makes the company stand out, but what also makes it unusual is its versatility, because it not only renovates homes but also builds new custom houses.

It has won numerous awards for renovation, and now it is also the winner of the Custom Builder of the Year award for 2015.

Roy’s passion for the reduction of energy is part of the company’s dedication to excellence. In keeping with its “green” objectives, RND offers as standard items in each home: dedicated HRV; solar-ready piping, radonready venting, footing barrier (to prevent capillary action in walls); low Volatile Organic Compounds and non-toxic materials; formaldehyde-free millwork and trim; recycled drywall; ductwork sealing and protection during construction; and, wherever feasible, the use of local materials.

The company takes a collaborative approach with home owner, architect, and design team. and has used the same group of sub Custom Builder of the Year RND CONSTRUCTION Solid Versatility By Francie Healy trades year after year.

“I didn’t win this award on my own,” Roy says. “I have a great team of dedicated staff, two of whom have been with me since 1990.”

The company also won 2015 awards in the categories of Housing Details, Renovation ($100,000 to $199,999), and Green Custom Home of the Year. The company is a significant leader in “green” education.

“I want to make sure I’m doing my part to ‘green’ Ottawa,” Roy says. From a large family, he learned from an early age to re-use and recycle everything. Now he only buys quality: things that will last for long time.

The Custom Builder of the Year award is also a recognition of the company’s generous involvement in the community and the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association. Recently RND Construction won an Ottawa Renovators Council Award for “outstanding dedication” to both the council and the GOHBA.

“We put our beliefs, integrity and passion for excellence into everything we do from start to finish,” says Roy. “We know we will look back years from now with pride and say: ‘We built that home’.”1

This one bedroom condo unit is a total change from 1its old, musty original. It now has a broad view of bright skies and downtown skyline. It also has heated tile floors and a bathroom with a spectacular marble shower.

A functional, elegant and contemporary additio1n with an enlarged kitchen changed this space from dark to beautiful natural light. It includes a large mudroom with a full-sized bathroom and abundant year-round storage. It also visually connects family and living rooms.
