Corporate profile: Laurysen Kitchens — Still in good hands

Laurysen KitchensBy Francie Healy

For more than 45 years, kitchens in Ottawa and beyond have been transformed thanks to an innovative couple from Ottawa.

Back in 1970, John and Adri Laurysen started a custom cabinet business out of their small garage. They devoted their lives to it. Their children, Bill and Caroline, did, too. The kids would come home from school and join their parents in the shop.

The business grew. And grew.

Now Laurysen Kitchens thrives in a 55,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility on Carp Road in Stittsville, and throughout an extensive dealership network. The “kids”, Bill and Caroline, as well as Caroline’s husband, Giuseppe Castrucci, and the third generation: Corey and Michael Laurysen, are carrying on the family tradition of fine craftsmanship.

The company provides several lines of kitchen cabinets and drawer systems. It also designs and makes custom cabinetry as well as a sophisticated closet and storage organization line called Klozets by Laurysen.

Giuseppe Castrucci is Laurysen’s VP of Sales and Marketing. He says Caroline and Bill are constantly researching the latest in in new colours, design trends, wood species and manufacturing equipment. Caroline goes to shows and makes frequent trips to Europe to see what’s current there.

“Because of the Internet,” says Giuseppe, “a lot of consumers are very savvy. They see what’s possible on European sites, and they want to know if they can get the same thing here.” Caroline makes sure they can.

Laurysen works on different levels: design, construction, renovation, and retail. Customers go into the showroom to see what is available, take a look at the plant, get ideas and work with designers. “We match them with a renovator suitable to the size of the job,” says Giuseppe. Laurysen also supplies kitchens to contractors for new homes.

“We work with many companies,” explains Giuseppe. “We’re part of a team.” The business tends to be brisk with renovations in the fall, and with new construction in winter, spring and summer.

The company, a RenoMark™ member, has won a long list of awards from the National Kitchen and Bath Association, Houzz, the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association, and the Ottawa Business Chamber of Commerce. Consecutively since 1997 it has been voted the #1 Cabinet Manufacturer by Ottawa consumers and awarded the “Gold – Consumer’s Choice Award”. It is a member of the Embridge Hall of Fame, which celebrates excellence in the residential construction industry.

Of great pride to the company and the family is the recognition, by the National Kitchen and Bath Association, of Corey and Michael Laurysen as members of Thirty Under 30, or what NKBA calls “the future rock stars of kitchen and bath.” They were chosen out of thousands of “outstanding young professionals” in North America.

“We’re very happy about that,” says Giuseppe. “This generation is in good hands.”
