The annual Greater Ottawa Home Builders Association (GOHBA) Housing Design Awards combined surprise and diversity as 568 members and guests celebrated at the annual Shaw Centre gala on Oct. 22.
’s Roy Nandram achieved something never before accomplished in the competition’s 33-year history.
He received two prestige awards, for both the Renovator of the Year and Custom Home Builder of the Year, as well as most of the Green Awards. Along with Christopher Simmonds Architects, RND received eight Housing Design Awards, five of them shared between the architect and contractor, who have worked together on many projects for the past two decades.
The dual prestige award status created a bit of a logistical challenge for Nandram, who – about to head to the photo area for the Custom Home Builder award, needed to be called back to accept the Renovator of the Year trophy.
“It’s a little bit overwhelming,” Nandram told a Postmedia reporter as he gestured to the pile of trophies. “What I liked is that there were a lot of good finalists … and I was shocked to win renovator of the year.”
Despite RND and Simmonds’ powerful results, they didn’t dominate the evening – in fact they failed to win awards for which they were finalists in several categories, as other well-established businesses and new entrants achieved significant results in the competition.
The winners were selected by a panel of seven judges, most from outside the Ottawa area. (The judges viewed the entries in 58 categories and voted online.)
Overall, there were more than 275 entries, narrowed down to 179 finalists, with 80 trophies, including the prestige awards.
In addition to Nandrom’s recognition as Renovator of the Year, other renovation awards included:
