Shouting from the rooftops
Those of us in the renovation industry who aspire to a higher level of professionalism are noticing a transition in our industry. It’s one we have been waiting for, and working towards, for years.
We have been shouting from the rooftops for years that our industry has to change. We have been talking to governments, consumer groups and advocates − and you, as homeowner – that the industry must change.
The Renovators’ Council of the Greater Ottawa Home Builders, along with the RenoMark™ program and its members, have worked tirelessly alongside key stakeholders of our industry to increase the public’s awareness of what they should expect from a renovator.
We have listened to the consumer. We have listened to their concerns, complaints, suggestions and praises. And finally we are beginning to see a movement in homeowners’ attitudes to what kind of company or individual they want renovating their homes, their most valuable asset.
We have always known that the homeowner was the key to reaching our goal of eliminating the underground economy, shutting down the fly-by-night scammers and raising the level of professionalism in our industry through simple supply-and-demand economics. As long as consumers continued to hire for cash, without contract, the first guy who gave them the lowest price; we, the professionals of this multi-billion-dollar industry, would never make ground.
The increasing access to true professionals, consumer awareness and programs such as the “Get It in Writing Campaign” championed by the federal government, as well as all levels of home builders associations from the Canadian Home Builders Association right down to the smallest renovator member of the RenoMark program, has led to a shift in our industry. A shift in the right direction.
Over the last few years we have noticed a change. It is accelerating and will continue to gain steam as long as the homeowner continues to seek out professional renovators. Consumers are tired of the unprofessional. They are tired of risking their savings, their homes and their families’ safety by investing their hard earned dollars with “contractors” who have no credibility and are more than willing to cheat the government by working illegally “under the table”.
Homeowners no longer feel “I gotta guy” is a good enough recommendation for someone they need to trust with their homes and families.
The homeowner has always had the power to change the renovation industry and turn it into the profession we have all been longing for.
We, your professional renovators, are grateful that this is exactly what is happening, that we are seeing these changes come to fruition. You, as homeowners, are driving this most positive trend.
So I will say it again, on behalf of all of our RenoMark™ renovator members. Thank you!
Norm Lecuyer, Chair of the Renovators Council of the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association and the local RenoMark program, is President of Just Basements and HOME Inc. Design Build Renovations.
